The Evolution Of ‘Chupa Chups’ Logo

Northern Ireland-based graphic designer David Airey of Logo design Love has created an image that charts the progression of lollipop brand Chupa Chups’ logo—in a post, he’s also put together some research done on the brand.

Originally founded by Spaniard Enric Bernat in 1958, Chupa Chups comes from the Spanish verb “chupar”, which means, “to suck”.

According to The Guardian, how Chupa Chups lollipop came about was when Bernat saw that sweets didn’t suit children, their main consumer.

“They got their hands sticky and ran into trouble with their parents. So I stuck a sweet on a stick,” he said.

One interesting thing about Chupa Chups logo evolution: Did you know that surrealist painter Salvador Dali designed a logo for the brand, once upon a time?

According to BBC’s Modern Masters: “In 1969, Dali was approached to design a new logo, and the result became as instantly recognizable as his melting clocks. Dali incorporated the Chupa Chups name into a brightly coloured daisy shape. Always keenly aware of branding, Dali suggested that the logo be placed on top of the lolly instead of the side so that it could always be seen intact.”
