Having loved vintage magazines from the ‘50s and ‘60s since he was a boy, Belgium-based artist Sammy Slabbinck has turned his large collection of these magazines into surreal pop art collages.
Using images from advertisements and articles, he brings together diverse graphic elements in his artworks and somehow manages to create unexpectedly cohesive pieces.
The most fascinating thing about these collages is that although the scenes they depict are logically impossible, many of them are disconcertingly almost believable—as if in a parallel universe, people have “swimming pool soup” for dinner all the time.
On finding direction for his work, the artist states, “One image can create a process of association and then it comes down to finding the right images to combine. Structuring images is the hardest part of all. There is no real fixed strategy, it all boils down to a gut feeling I guess.”
