In Japan, Incredible Animal Sculptures Made From Straw

During fall in Japan, mountains of straw are left behind after rice is harvested. Instead of discarding it, the people of the Kagawa and Niigata Prefecture put them to a more artistic use. They turn the leftover straw into incredible sculptures.

Held during “straw art festivals”, the people thatch layers of straw around wooden frames, forming sculptures that resemble various animals and structures.

Some of sculptures are even sturdy enough to allow visitors to climb and sit on them.
