60-year-old Gary from Phoenix, Arizona, has come up with a commonsensical yet ingenious way of getting back the money he has spent.
Gary has written down a request in red marker on each US$1 bill he uses, asking people to return it to him, even writing down his address so they can be mailed back.
The message is as follows: “Please return this bill to me. I am very poor.”
Although it seems like the man is cheating people out of their money, it is not illegal as he is merely requesting for them to do so. The currency also remains usable as most of the bill remains visible.
The retiree makes it a point to only write on US$1 bills as they are more likely to be returned, and gets about US$2 a day. He makes—or saves—US$60 a month, but sometimes get a up to US$100 from those who send him more money.
Many people from people around the world have made it a point to return his money, with one asking, “Why didn’t I think of that?”
What do you think—is this a good idea, or do you feel that Gary is scamming people?
