Last year, we found out that Turkish men get facial hair transplants to show that they are “manly”. It appears that this trend is also prevalent in New York City, with men paying up to US$7,000 just to get a “hipster beard”.
According to Dr Jeffrey Epstein, many people have taken to this burgeoning trend—“whether you’re talking about the Brooklyn hipster or the advertising executive, the look is definitely to have a bit of facial hair,” he stated.
Epstein, who used to do a few beard transplants a year, is now averaging about three a week. Dr. Yael Halaas, who also does this procedure, stated that many of his patients are detail oriented and come from Williamsburg, Bushwick and Park Slope.
During the transplant, the doctor pulls out hair from the patient’s head, and places it into micro-incisions on the patient’s face. The root of the hair remains even though the follicles fall out—after this, the patient will be able to grow out his facial hair and shave as per normal.
Many people make use of this procedure to get a fuller beard, or fill in sections of their faces that would otherwise be hairless. Some patients even show the doctor photographs of celebrities for reference—Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, and George Clooney’s beards are currently all the rage. Tom Selleck’s mustache is popular, too.
However, others undergo these transplants for different reasons—some patients are transsexuals, while some are men who have struggled to grow out their facial hair. There are also Hasidic Jews who would like denser sidelocks.
Peter, a patient who only wanted to be known by his first name, stated that this change was a gradual process. Many men who have had the transplant are happy with the results.
It costs US$3,000 to fill in sections of a beard, while the full treatment is priced at US$7,000.
What do you think—would you pay this much money for a beard?
