With the extensive amount of information that we have access to on a daily basis, infographics are becoming an efficient way to convey data effectively these days.

Steven Heller and Rick Landers offers readers a glimpse into the creative processes of designers when creating engaging infographics with their book titled Infographic Designers’ Sketchbooks.

It features the sketches, three-dimensional and digital mock-ups behind infographic design, showing how these designers translate data into artful presentations.

“I don’t think there are rules for designing infographics. Each designer's process is unique” said Heller, cochair of the MFA Design Department at the School of Visual Art, as quoted by Fast Co. Design.

For instance, art director of the New York Times Book Review Nicholas Blechman added a dose of humor to his data-driven graphics by dramatizing his drawings—while other designers may like sketching their ideas on the computer, Blechman prefers the traditional way of illustrating his thoughts with a pen on paper.

Heller added that “however talented a visual artist or graphic designer might be, she won’t be able to make an effective infographic without a deep understanding of data. “That’s the first skill you have to have—a definite and focused interest in the material you’re trying to produce as a visual””.

The book is available for purchase from Princeton Architectural Press for US$36.
