Ibadan, Oyo State-based artist and raffia palm cane weaver Ojo Obaniyi used his craft skill in an unusually creative way to show people what he does and advertise his business.
The Nigerian artist covered the exterior and interior of his Volkswagen pickup with raffia palm canes—everything from the car body and steering wheel, to the wheel caps, chairs and dashboard.
“I wanted to prove a point that it is not only the educated elite that can make a positive change in the society. We, the artisans also have talents to effect a change and make positive impact in the society,” Ojo told African Spotlight.
“That is why I decided that I too must do something that will make people recognize me and know me across the world, and by extension prove to the world that African and indeed the entire Black race have very talented people.”
