How do you safely demolish skyscrapers in densely-populated cities?
Tokyo-based building company Taisei Corp developed a fascinating new way to ecologically and safely take down tall buildings.
The method—dubbed ‘Taisei Ecological Reproduction System’ (“Tecorep” in short)—doesn’t use cranes, as cranes can not go high enough for buildings taller than 100 meters.
Instead, the structure would be disassembled in an enclosed space—using the roof of a building as a “hat”, to create the closed work site.
Cranes would be brought inside the building; and the roof would be held up by temporary columns, which would be lowered by jacks as the higher floors get removed.
“It’s kind of like having a disassembly factory on top of the building and putting a big hat there, and then the building shrinks [from the top],” Hideki Ichihara, who oversees construction technology development, told The Japan Times Online.
With the hat, working environments are safer, and outside noise and dust are reduced.
The Tecorep method is also not affected by the weather—which makes it faster to disassemble a building.
