To help promote literacy in the UK, fast food giant McDonald’s will be replacing its Happy Meal toys with books.
According to the Guardian, McDonald’s has pledged to give away 15 million fiction and non-fiction books with its Happy Meal over the next two years.
Alistair Macrow, the vice president of McDonald’s, commented that the feedback from parents has been “overwhelmingly positive”, with nine out of 10 parents wanting to see more book promotions from the fast food chain.
“I’ve been surprised by the statistics [from the National Literacy Trust] that show that one in three children don’t own a book, and that half don’t enjoy reading,” said Macrow. “This is a real opportunity for us to help shift the balance and put the fun back into reading.”
