‘#litterati’ is a global movement on Instagram that is helping to stop pollution and clean the planet “one piece of litter at a time”.
Started by Jeff Kirschner last year, he created an Instagram account (@litterati) and hashtag (#litterati) to document photos of trash that he picked up along the course of his day.
After some time, other Instagram users joined in by tagging their photos with #litterati.
Realizing the potential of this project, Kirschner created a website that archives all the photos that have been captured with the #litterati hashtag.
According to the site, over 10,000 photos from 22 countries were uploaded last year—illustrating “how powerful the collective impact can be”.
To join this movement, simply take a photo of a piece of trash that you’ve picked up and upload it on Instagram using the #litterati hashtag.
