Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the launch of ‘Internet.org’, an effort that hopes to make internet access available to everyone in the world.

A collaboration among Facebook, Ericsson, Samsung, Nokia, Opera, Qualcomm and MediaTek, Internet.org hopes to connect the two-thirds of the world’s population (about 5 billion) that have no online access, to give them the same opportunity as the other 2.7 million people in the world.

“There are huge barriers in developing countries to connecting and joining the knowledge economy,” Zuckerberg said in a statement. “Internet.org brings together a global partnership that will work to overcome these challenges, including making internet access available to those who cannot currently afford it.”

Through joint projects, sharing of knowledge and other practices, the tech leaders will explore solutions in three main areas: affordability, efficiency, and business models.

Does the whole world really need to be online? And is the internet really needed in countries that lack even the basic necessities, such as food and water?
