In New York City, A Restaurant Where You Have To Eat In Silence

Inspired by the fact that Indian Buddhist monks eat their breakfast silently, restaurant owner Nicholas Nauman decided to have his restaurant guests eat in the same manner as well.

Located in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood, “Eat” serves a US$40 four-course meal to guests who try as much to maintain the meditative silence that pervades the restaurant.

In many instances, customers have to make use of facial expressions to communicate, while others have walked out to sneeze and control their oncoming fits of giggles.

According to Nauman, eating silently gives people the “opportunity to enjoy food in a way [they] might not have otherwise”, making dining quietly a thought-provoking experience.
