Infographic: Is Multitasking Killing Your Productivity?

As you may already know, there are many ways that we can destroy our productivity—but did you know that multitasking may be doing more harm than good?

Despite having various tools and gadgets at our disposal to help us get work done quicker, studies have shown that only 2% of people can actually multitask effectively—while the other 98% are actually killing their productivity.

In an infographic by OnlineCollege called ‘The Perils of Multitasking’, it explores the downside of multitasking and the reasons why we get distracted.

The infographic reports that technology actually encourages fruitless multitasking—on average, employees who use a computer at work are distracted once every 10.5 minutes.

Even while watching television, the average American will have the urge to multitask—with 42% browsing the internet, 29% talking on the phone and 26% texting their peers.

The infographic also highlights that multitasking will cause a 40% drop in productivity and may even lower your IQ by 10—that is twice the effects of smoking marijuana.

Lastly, the infographic recommends that if you want to be more productive, you should concentrate on one task at a time because more often, you will get the job done much quicker.

Do you think you are able to multitask well? Or are you actually distracting yourself from the task at hand?
