Photographer Eric Pillot captured the forlorn expressions of the animals in various European zoos, questioning the effects of these artificial environments on their well-being.
In his photo series titled ‘In Situ’, most of the animals appeared to be housed in artificial spaces that hardly resembled their natural habitats, save for some nature-inspired wall murals, small patches of greenery, and wooden panels that mimicked tree branches.
Through his work, Pillot pondered upon the zoos’ decision to decorate these enclosures in a modern and minimalist way.
“Colorful, geometric or ‘pictorial’, it seemed finally that these facilities that I have endeavored to represent, if they have been carefully designed to enable us to see the animals they house, could be a reflection of the particular man himself”, said Pillot.
