After Kelly Roexroat realized that there were only 59 official emojis for food, the writer started to wonder why the Unicode Consortium had not included more of them into their ever-expanding lexicon.
The writer then embarked on a diet to eat only foods that could be represented as emojis, chronicling her week on The Atlantic.
Rexroat made it a point to only use emojis that clearly represented food—animal icons such as the pig were not used as they were not under the “objects” category. She also cleverly made use of some ambiguous icons—like the “pot of food” to vary her diet a little.
