Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Dentsu Inc has unveiled a small, human-like robot that will be the first autonomous android to set foot in the NASA International Space Station (ISS).
Called ‘Kirobo’, the communication robot weighs 2.2 pounds (almost 1kg), and measures 13.4-inches tall—and was designed by Tomotaka Takahashi, a famed robot creator.
Kirobo understands Japanese, has information and communication processing capabilities, and responds in a synthesized voice.
It also has behavioural qualities, and is equipped with a camera that helps it to recognize faces and record videos/images.
According to Gizmag, the robot’s main objective would be to entertain Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata, who will be tweeting and interacting with followers on Earth through the robot.
Kirobo is currently undergoing zero-gravity tests and preparing for its first voyage to outer-space.
