George Lucas’ original script for Star Wars—named The Star Wars—is very different from the one that made it to production, which went on to become one of the most revered sci-fi plots of all time.
This first script features several different characters and includes different versions of the iconic characters we know and love today—for instance, Han Solo was supposed to be a six-foot-tall reptilian alien.
Although it has since became fabled lore in the fan community, few Star Wars devotees have read the story of The Star Wars—this is set to change, as Dark Horse Comics has just announced that it will be adapting it into a eight-issue comic book mini-series.
According to Dark Horse Comics writer J.W. Rinzler: “While working with George on another book project, I once asked if we could adapt his rough draft. He was hesitant. Years later, with Dark Horse’s invaluable help, we showed him a few drawn and colored pages of what it might look like. He gave us the okay.”
