YouTube has announced that it will be shutting down after 8 years and will no longer be accepting new videos.

In its new video titled ‘YouTube’s ready to select a winner’, competition director Tim Liston explained how YouTube was created as part of a contest to find the best home video online and thanked everyone for participating in the 8-year-long contest.

He announced that a panel of judges will be reviewing all the videos and ten years from now—on 1 April 2023—the video sharing site will return to announce the winner of the contest.

“Nearly eight years later, with 72 hours of video being uploaded every minute, we finally have enough content to close the competition,” wrote YouTube on its blog. “We’ve started the process to select a winner and as of tomorrow at midnight, we will be closing the site to submissions.”

They even created a live stream, where you can watch their presenters announce the nominees of the contest for 12 hours every day over the next two years.
