Artist Creates Bird Nests Entirely Out Of Disused Suitcases

In his project ‘Nest Colonies’, New Jersey-based artist Robert Lach creates nest sculptures using only the material found in old, disused suitcases.

Lach said that ‘Nest Colonies’ was inspired by both his interest in bird watching and in architecture, while his choice of material was motivated by a desire to connect with his local environment.

The nests, just like real birds’ nests, were made from a combination of materials.

Lach used shredded suitcases linings, cardboard and other materials he found in the suitcase.

‘Nest Colonies’ explores the feelings of traveling, as expressed by the suitcase, against the feeling of being home that the nests signify.

“This feeling of home and movement relates to the migration habit of birds, and so the suitcases were reworked to contain finely shredded birds’ nests,” Lach said.
