IBM scientists have announced that they have created the world’s smallest stop-motion film using individual, microscopic atoms.

Titled ‘A Boy and His Atom’, the film is about a character named Atom “who befriends a single atom and goes on a playful journey that includes dancing, playing catch and bouncing on a trampoline”.

“Set to a playful musical track, the movie represents a unique way to convey science outside the research community,” wrote IBM

To create the movie, scientists had to capture and control the atoms using an IBM-invented scanning tunneling microscope, which weighs two tons and operates at a temperature -268 degrees Celsius—it also magnifies the atoms by 100 million times.

Atoms were moved to a precise location using a super-sharp needle along a copper surface— after which, scientists would capture images to create the frames for the film.

The Guinness Book of World Records has certified ‘A Boy and His Atom’ as the world’s smallest stop-motion film.
