‘The Social Media Generation’ is a sobering, insightful comic created by Zen Pencils that deftly sums up our addiction to social media.
Based on comedian Marc Maron’s memoir Attempting Normal, it follows an unnamed protagonist as he goes about his daily commute transfixed to his phone.
The comic exposes our need for validation and attention by likening our emotional intelligence to that of a seven-year-old in one panel. In another panel, it laments how apathetic society has become, using the example of a drug addict getting high in a toilet cubicle. These messages are underscored by the sombre gray color scheme.
With its spot-on depiction of the self-absorbed world we live in, ‘The Social Media Generation’ will no doubt strike an uncomfortably familiar chord in many of us.
