Google’s Destination Pin Icon Pops Up In Various City Centers

German artist Aram Bartholl is interested in the interplay between internet, culture and reality. His public space installation, ‘Map’, was inspired by Google’s red destination pin icon that appears on Google Maps.

Using wood, wire, nails and screws, he constructed a sculpture shaped exactly like Google’s red destination pin icon, and installed it at the exact spots identified by Google Maps as the center of different cities.

“Transferred to physical space the map marker questions the relation of the digital information space to every day life public city space. The perception of the city is increasingly influenced by geolocation services,” reads a description on Bartholl’s website.
