‘Landfill Dogs’ is an on-going photo series/project by North Carolina-based photographer Shannon Johnstone that addresses the issue of pet overpopulation and euthanization.
In this series, Johnstone brings one dog from the Wake County Animal Shelter to a local landfill—capturing them as they run and explore the open space, an experience they rarely get to encounter.
She chose the landfill as the venue because it’s where “the dogs will end up if they do not find a home”. “Their bodies will be buried deep in the landfill among our trash,” described Johnstone.
“These are not just cute pictures of dogs,” she added. “My goal is to offer an individual face to the souls that are lost because of animal overpopulation, and give these animals one last chance.”
She divides the photos of this project into three albums: dogs that have found homes, dogs that are still looking for homes, and the unlucky ones that never found a home.
