Popular Search Engine Results On Mental Illnesses, Inspired By UN Women Campaign

Inspired by the UN Women’s viral ad campaign advocating women’s rights, Tumblr site ‘The Madvocate’ created a similar series that uses a search engine’s auto-complete feature to highlight common opinions on people with mental illnesses.

The series features images of iconic people, including President Abraham Lincoln and writer Sylvia Plath who had depression, writer Virginia Woolf and artist Vincent Van Gogh who both suffered from bipolar disorder, and mathematician John Nash who had schizophrenia.

The auto-complete results show how mental illnesses are commonly associated with violence and crime, and reveal horrifying opinions like “schizophrenics should be killed”.
