In every analog photographer’s darkroom, lies a utilitarian-looking tray that allows prints to come to life. However, as analog photography makes way for today’s growing preference for digital prints, the developer tray seems to be forgotten.
Photographer John Cyr seeks to remind people of the “functional longevity” of the humble developer tray through his project, ‘Developer Trays’.
After he contacted various photographers for his project, Cyr managed to shoot a total of 82 empty developer trays.
While most developer trays in his project showed evidence of heavy use with its numerous stains and scratches, there are some trays that appeared almost spotless—perhaps, an indication of the owner’s unique “print processing habits”.
