If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, or even just someone who has sat through the movies, you would probably know about “Sting”, a small magical sword belonging to hobbit Bilbo Baggins—which was then passed on to Frodo Baggins—that glows blue when orcs or goblins are near.
Based on this concept, Spark IO has created the tongue-in-cheek WarSting, a device that glows when it detects the presence of unsecured WiFi networks.
Designed to urge people to encrypt their networks, WarSting is made from a toy model of Sting—according to its creators, “when you slash WarSting through the air near a unsecured Wi-Fi network, WarSting jumps on that network and publishes a message: {YOUR WI-FI NETWORK} has been vanquished!”
You can actually make your own WarSting with a Spark Core, a WiFi development kit, two AA batteries, a couple of LEDs, and other parts—find detailed instructions for this fun DIY project here.
Would you like to own your very own WarSting? Watch the video below to learn more about it.
