In her ongoing photo project called ‘The Attendants’, Greek photojournalist Myrto Papadopoulos captures thought-provoking images of prostitutes in their workplaces.
The purpose of this study is to highlight the ever-evolving sex industry in Greece and its relationship with the current economic crisis in Europe.
According to Papadopoulos, Greece is the primary gateway for illegal immigrants entering the European Union and is also a key entry point for human trafficking.
“The primary distinction made between sex trafficking and prostitution in relevant literature is that sex trafficking is involuntary while prostitution is voluntary,” wrote Papadopoulos. “However, the reality is very different and not so straightforward.”
“Through this project, my aim is to present by photographing and filming the world of prostitution and trafficking in Greece.”
She also wants to raise people’s awareness on the issue and highlight the problem of sexually transmitted diseases.
