Step into the ‘Disco Volante’ pizzeria in Vienna and be transported to the "Italo-Disco" era of the 1970s and 80s.
Its centre-piece is a spherical pizza oven covered in hundreds of mirrored tiles, and equipped with a rotating mechanism. Anchored to a chimney and hovering in plain sight, it looks exactly like a shiny disco ball.
The oven was designed by Austrian architect Lukas Galehr, and functions both as an oven and an atmospheric art piece. When the dough runs out, the oven rotates, transforming the restaurant into a sparkling disco setting.
In the evening, the restaurant lights are dimmed and multicolored spotlights are aimed at the oven, creating a fancy light display that flickers across the white walls and ceilings.
