Artist Uses Explosives And Fireworks To Create Chinese 'Ink' Paintings

New York-based artist Cai Guo-Qiang, last featured for his controversial tortoises mounted with iPads exhibition, has created a new body of work that uses explosives.

His drawings titled ‘Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter’ is a four part art piece made with porcelain representing the four seasons, decorated with gunpowder—the pieces were set ablaze by Cai at an event, with the explosives detonating beneath fireproof sheets.

The ashes from the explosions create a subtle shading contrast, highlighting the intricate details of flowers, trees and birds featured on each drawing—the act represents the renewing spirit and tradition of the Chinese literati ink painting.

His artworks will be exhibited at the Power Station of Art from now through 26 October 2014—find more of the artist's works on his website.
