Toronto-based trans photographer Wynne Neilly’s self-portrait project is an intimate look at his transition from female to male.
Neilly, who specializes in photography exploring gender expression, started the series one year into his hormone therapy.
‘Female to ‘Male’’ chronicles his journey from a woman to a man, in the form of pictures and documents that record his physical and psychological changes.
“My goal is to add to the visibility of different trans experiences. I absolutely cannot speak or create art for every trans person, but I can create something that speaks to my own personal journey,” he said in an interview with PolicyMic.
Neilly sees his change from one sex to another not as a transition, but rather a “continual evolution.”
Ultimately, he hopes his series will open people’s eyes to the challenges of transitioning.
“I have on display many different documents and letters and doctors’ notes that have been a part of that process, and when I look at them all together I find myself a bit exhausted at how difficult it can be to access trans healthcare at times. I hope that viewers can at least have a better perspective on what my process has been like for me.”
‘Female to ‘Male’’ is currently exhibiting at the Ryerson Image Centre in Toronto til 24 August 2014.
