Before he became a famous film-maker, Stanley Kubrick was a budding photographer.
While attending City College New York in the 1940s, Kubrick worked as a photographer for Look Magazine, chronicling life in the city.
His black-and-white shots of street life in New York City display early signs of the immaculate composition, lighting and balance that he would later come to be known for.
Kubrick possessed a keen eye and a gift for mood, imparting a romantic quality to ordinary scenes.
It was during his employment at the publication that he became interested in the film programs at the Museum of Modern Art, which saw him move into his eventual life-long career in film.
