Despite secretly promoting its new electronic-paper smartwatch, ‘Fes Watch’, via Japanese crowdfunding website Makuake, Sony has managed to smash the goals for its crowdfunding projects recently.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the Fes Watch was first launched in September 2014 via start-up venture Fashion Entertainments, which was recently revealed as a subdivision of Sony.
“We hid Sony’s name because we wanted to test the real value of the product, whether there will be demand for our concept,” said a spokesperson from the project.
It seems like Sony’s risky move to promote the watch stealthily has been successful—it has managed to raise four times the amount of its initial funding goal of 1 million yen, or USD$8,500 approximately, in its second crowdfunding project.
The analog-like smartwatch integrates an e-paper display on its dial and strap, letting you pick from 24 cool designs that you can customize via its physical side button.
It may not carry the functions afforded by most smartwatches, such as GPS or heart-rate monitors. However, its long-lasting battery life, which can run up to 60 day, might entice you.
