In a rather uncharacteristic move for a Super Bowl ad, the NFL has unveiled a chilling PSA about domestic violence that is based on a real-life event.
Created by Grey New York, the ad opens with a woman calling 911 to order pizza. The operator is initially puzzled but quickly realizes the situation is amiss when she can’t talk openly.
As the woman continues the fake call, she gives her address while the operator tells her that help is on the way. Meanwhile the camera pans around the house, revealing that a scuffle has occurred—books are strewn on a rumpled carpet, a wall has been punched out, and a broken picture of a couple lies on the floor.
The 60-second ad ends with the line, “When it’s hard to talk, it’s up to us to listen.”
The spot is part of the NFL’s ‘No More’ campaign, and comes as the football league is working to repair its tarnished image after former Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice assaulted his wife last year.
It will air during the Super Bowl and on digital channels, and will receive celebrity endorsements.
