Chinese electronics company Xiaomi, whose fitness band we previously featured, has just announced plans to launch its latest product, an affordable action-ready camera that aims to give GoPro’s budget camera ‘Hero’ a run for its money.
The ‘Yi Action Camera’ features a 16-megapixel camera, high definition 1080p video recording and costs 399 yuan or just US$64, a bargain compared to the US$130 ‘Hero’. Its 64GB memory is twice as large as the latter’s, and at 72g, it is also considerably lighter than its 111g rival.
Like the ‘Hero’, the ‘Yi Action Camera’ can reach depths of 40 meters underwater, arguably an important criteria for those who wish to use it for underwater expeditions.
The cheap price tag does come with a slight drawback; unlike other brands, it does not come with rigging or protective camera casing.
Selfie addicts will cheer the travel edition of the camera, which includes a selfie stick mount and retails at US$80.
Xiaomi is the latest company to hop onto the action camera bandwagon after Kodak and Polaroid.
If you’re hoping to snag yourself a model, you might be disappointed to know that it’s temporarily out of stock as of writing, but we reckon it’s just a matter of time before stocks are replenished.
