Dutch product designer Willem van der Sluis has designed beautiful dome-shaped structures to house the sports arenas at Zaandam, a prison located just outside of Amsterdam.
Modular systems that are easy to transport and transform, these shiny, perforated domes are designed to simulate the experience of being in nature for people who are actually locked in.
The dome shape is chosen as it creates the feeling of space—humane design elements like this are significant because the prison houses illegal immigrants instead of criminals.
These eye-popping structures not only challenge the general perception of prisons, but also help to bring awareness to the social issues that surround this particular institution.
While the designer is unsure if these domes make the occupants of the prison feel better, he has at least “offered them something a little better than a regular cage”.
