Greek Art Gets Updated With Japanese Video Game Graphics

The pieces by artists Oliver Payne and Keiichi Tanaami are among the most interesting East-meets-West artworks we have seen to date.

‘Perfect Cherry Blossom’ is a series of collages that mixes East and West, new and old, digital and analog—it pays homage to an arcade game of the same name, one of the most violent the Japanese have ever created.

By combining the images of Japanese Bullet Hell Games and photographs of classical Greek sculptures, the artists merged a distinctive pop aesthetic with ancient western art, to highlight how the two seemingly separate worlds have influenced each other.
