A bold and beautiful movement has been making waves on social media lately—plus-sized ladies uploading photos of themselves in bikinis with the hashtag ‘#fatkini’.
First coined by fashion blogger GabiFresh, the term ‘Fatkini’ is used to refer to swimwear worn by plus-sized and curvy women.
In this revolutionary movement, the #fatkini trend is one where plus-sized ladies are not only seen embracing their curves, but also owning the word “fat” as a step towards self-acceptance.
There is also a rise in retailers stocking up on ‘fatkinis’.
In an interview with Colorlines, lecturer and author Virgie Tovar recounted her experience of visiting a Forever 21 shop in San Francisco, “I remember walking in and seeing a two-piece bathing suit in the plus-sized section and I started crying. It just became this symbol of a shift, it was so symbolic and meaningful.”
