Move over JPEG, there’s a new image format in town—the BPG (Better Portable Graphics).
Created by French programmer Fabrice Bellard, BPG can deliver the same image quality as JPEG at about half the size.
A study by Mozilla showed that the video encoding standard HEVC is better than other technologies. Hence, Bellard designed BPG based on a subset of its technologies.
However, it remains to be seen if BPG will take over as a widely used image format as browser developers will have to adopt built-in support—currently, some unique Javascript code is required to load the images in .bpg format.
