Last week, a photo of a man sleeping soundly on the shoulder of a kind fellow commuter on the subway went viral—inspired by this small but heartwarming deed, charity organization Charidy went on the subway trains of New York City to conduct a social experiment.
Sending a sleepy-looking man and an accompanying cameraman out onto the subway, they recorded the reactions of New Yorkers when a stranger “unconsciously” rests his head on their shoulders in sleep.
While many people instinctively shrugged off the sleeper when he came into contact, it was surprising and gratifying to see that some others happily lent their shoulders with a smile.
Noting that “every moment is a chance to help those around us”, this inspiring social experiment urges us to be generous with our kindness, even with strangers.
