Sunday Night Movies is a book by illustrator and writer Leanne Shapton featuring lovely watercolour paintings of scenes from nearly 80 black-and-white films.
The paintings range from title and end credits, to close-ups of actors, and couples embracing or talking. Without any text to introduce the sequences, Shapton leaves it to the reader to study the images and deduce what they mean in the context of the films depicted.
With its simple black and white aesthetic, the book stands as a quiet meditation on the art of cinema.
Sunday Night Movies will be published this October by Drawn and Quarterly.
