Director Guillermo del Toro, known for his horror fantasy movies Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone, has brought his ghoulish touch to The Simpsons’ opening credits couch gag.

del Toro also manages to slip in a whole bevy of horror movie and gothic literature icons, as well as references to his own movies; in one scene Mr Burns is depicted as the creepy hand-eye monster from Pan’s Labyrinth.
