‘Just the Two of Us’ is a poignant photo series by Austrian photographer Klaus Pichler, where he enters the homes of cosplay enthusiasts and captures them dressed in their elaborate costumes against the backdrops of their everyday life.
Taken between 2011 and 2013, his images aim to highlight the individuals behind the costumes without actually showing their faces.
According to his artist statement, he wrote: “Who hasn’t had the desire to just be someone else for awhile? Dressing up is a way of creating an alter ego and a second skin which one’s behavior can be adjusted to. Regardless of the motivating factors which cause somebody to acquire a costume, the main principle remains the same: the civilian steps behind the mask and turns into somebody else. ’Just the Two of Us’ deals with both: the costumes and the people behind them.”
