Famous Paintings Carefully Recreated With Layers Of Colorful Masking Tapes

Mona Lisa, Leonardo da Vinci

For her recent series of “paintings”, Japanese oil painting major Nasa Funahara from Musashino Art University used layers of colorful masking tapes to create wonderfully detailed versions of famous paintings, including Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Using masking tapes from her collection of 450 rolls, Funahara painstakingly tore bits and strips of tape by hand to recreate large-scale versions of these paintings—each painting took about a week to complete.

It is fascinating to see how Funahara managed to combine various patterns and colors of the masking tapes to match the intricate strokes found in these classic paintings.
