Director of Photography for Sports Illustrated Brad Smith dispenses practical information for freelance shutterbugs on how they can get a foot in the door with photo editors.
“You need to get your work in front of a photo editor. Ideally, a promo card I think is better than a website, because a website takes time, gets lost, it gets deleted, it’s possible it goes to spam and no one ever sees it,” Smith shared.
He continued, “Do not spend every single second talking about the photos, let the photos talk for themselves… Don’t feel you have to speak for every one of the images. If you have to describe it overly, it’s probably not the image that should be in your book anyway.”
