20-year-olds Lucas Patchett and Nicholas Marchesi have converted an old white van into a mobile laundromat to help the homeless people living in Brisbane, Australia, wash their clothes safely and regularly.
The two friends launched their free service, ‘Orange Sky Laundry’, in July 2014, making it the first mobile laundry service for the homeless in Australia.
Patchett told Buzzfeed that they started their project as they felt that there were “minimal affordable access to hygiene services” for homeless people, an area which they thought was “overlooked”.
To create their mobile laundromat, the pair installed a portable generator and two washers and dryers, allowing them to wash up to 44 pounds of laundry every hour.
Currently, Orange Sky Laundry is undergoing a trial period, operating for five days a week around Brisbane. The duo also hope to operate throughout Australia by the end of 2015.
