“99 of these (signs) that you see in the city, out of a hundred, I do ‘em.”

Meet handmade sign painter Earl Phillips.

The 80-year-old respectable man is an unsung hero who hand-paints the thousands of signage that pepper the streets of the Cleveland area.

In a mini documentary, titled ‘Behind the Sign’, Phillips shares his stories of being a sign painter.

He said, “What you see is what I do. There are people coming in here (saying) ‘I want Peace Tree green’, ‘I want cocoa brown, you got it?’ No, I’m sorry. I just have three or four colors. But you see, most of the customers don’t know what works good together. You’re looking for contrast, and I’ll say leave it up to the sign painter. But still, they insist. (So) you bow gracefully and give them what they want.”
