Designers Reimagine The Creative Brief As Physical Objects

For their latest experiment, New York-based design collective And Then One Day reimagined the creative brief by replacing them with specially created artifacts, which they sent to selected artists.

Each package contained three objects and a letter asking the artists to think about how they related to each other, and to create a story out of that.

Using a medium of their choice, they were free to interpret the objects in whatever way they saw fit.

Each artist received the same three items: a wooden ruler, a 3D model of an atom, and a Western Union telegram dated 23 December, 1963, bearing a mysterious message.

The designers deliberately used the same objects, as they wanted to see “how a collective of individuals responds to one brief and the same set of stimuli.”

The participating artists come from a variety of backgrounds, including a co-owner of a 3D printed jewelry company, a web developer, and a footwear designer.

Their interpretations will be on view as part of the collective’s inaugural gallery show that will also feature photography, illustrations, film, music, and writing.

The opening night will be held at Specials on C on Friday, 21 November from 6 to 10pm, while Saturday will feature an open gallery, with a party and performances at 8pm. Visitors will get the chance to meet the editors and artists.

Find out more about the project here, and consider checking out the gallery show if you’re in the area.
