To celebrate Tokyo’s Hotaru Festival last year, electronics company Panasonic released 100,000 LED bulbs into the Sumida River, creating a spectacular light show.
The water-activated bulbs—which lit up once they hit the water—mimic the glowing splendor of beautiful fireflies, as they floated down the river to the wonderment of thousands of festival-goers.
This breath-taking display made an impressive statement against pollution of the river—the LED lights were caught in a large net at the end of its course to prevent further damage.
