UK-based architecture company Hugh Broughton Architects has designed an Antarctic research station that is capable of ‘skiing’ on ice.
Called ‘Halley VI Antarctic research station’, the $40.6 million facility was built to withstand the extreme elements on the Brunt Ice Shelf.
Giant skis have been attached to the facility’s legs—allowing scientists to tow the building away from eminent danger.
Besides skis, the company also added a hydraulic system to the legs—allowing the structure to ‘climb’ out of built-up snow.
