California-based adventure photographer Chris Burkard, who previously shot stunning footage of surfers chasing waves in Iceland, has another oceanic project that documents the extreme sport of surfing in the Arctic Circle.

Shot in collaboration with cinematographer Anton Lorimer for SmugMug Films, Arctic Swell—Surfing the Ends of the Earth follows Burkard as he captures professional surfers Patrick Millin, Brett Barley and Chadd Konig riding the waves in the freezing temperatures and harsh conditions of Unstad beach in Norway.

The resulting eight-minute film takes viewers on a journey into one of the most remote places on earth, and provides insight into the lives and minds of the surfers who are crazy enough to take on their inhospitable terrain.

Coupled with heart-stopping footage of enormous waves threatening to engulf the surfers are Burkard’s awe-inspiring photographs of vast, glacial landscapes and crashing ocean currents and undertows, that provide an arresting visual testimony to the incredible force of Mother Nature.

Despite the challenges and discomfort that came with shooting in such a frigid environment, Burkard said it was the spectacular beauty of the surroundings, the prospect of braving the elements, and the adrenaline rush of witnessing professionals doing what they love that drives him to take on such projects.
